# Heraldic imagery gallery research

Issue: https://github.com/corkonian/oluanaigh/issues/26

Date: 2026-09-07

## Summary

No official grant, confirmation, Register of Arms entry, named armiger, branch, or formal blazon was found for a Looney, O'Looney, O'Luanaigh, Loney, or Lunney design in this pass. The gallery should therefore describe the images as reported, circulated, commercial, derivative, or family-associated imagery, not as verified arms.

The best public treatment is now a compact, provenance-led source gallery that separates three ideas:

- frequency: how often a visual pattern recurs across accessible sources;
- authority: whether the source can verify heraldic status.
- provenance: whether the image is user-supplied family-associated material or a commercial recurrence lead.

The most frequently recurring online visual pattern is a decorative achievement with a black upper shield area and an ermine-patterned lower shield. It still lacks a formal blazon or official heraldic record.

## Ranking method

The original rank was based on observed independent recurrence across accessible source pages and image results, with source quality noted separately. Multiple pages from the same vendor or product network were counted cautiously as one commercial cluster unless they exposed distinct variant use.

The public gallery was revised after review to use two supplied images rather than original schematic redraws. The current order is editorial and provenance-led, not a claim that either image has greater heraldic authority.

## Public gallery imagery

| Display | Reported image pattern | Observed recurrence | Source quality | Public status |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 1 | Supplied Looney crest-style achievement with motto `Patriae infelici fidelis` ("Faithful to an unhappy country"), blue and white shield, castle, and red stag | Family-supplied image; motto and stag-style commercial recurrence leads exist online | Family tradition / D lead | Family-associated image and motto lead; not verified arms or a verified family motto |
| 2 | Supplied simplified black-chief or upper-field shield over a white ermine-like lower field | Matches the family-held/repo reference and the most frequent online black-chief-over-ermine surname-art cluster | Family tradition / D lead | Family-associated and recurrence image lead; not verified arms |

## Source notes

### Official and archival context

- National Library of Ireland, Office of the Chief Herald of Ireland: https://www.nli.ie/office-chief-herald
  - The office is the authoritative institutional context for Irish arms. It states that arms are granted or confirmed to individuals and corporate bodies and recorded in the Register of Arms.
  - No Looney/O'Looney-specific record was found in accessible web searching.
- National Library of Ireland, `Shields and Arms`: https://www.nli.ie/news-stories/stories/shields-and-arms-medieval-heraldry-national-library-ireland
  - Useful context for the NLI heraldic manuscript collections and the need to work from blazons and identified records.
- National Cultural Institutions Act, 1997, section 13: https://www.irishstatutebook.ie/eli/1997/act/11/section/13/enacted/en/html
  - Statutory context for the Chief Herald's heraldic functions.

### Surname-specific image leads

- IrishSurnames.com, Looney: https://www.irishsurnames.com/cgi-bin/gallery.pl?capname=Looney&letter=l&name=looney
  - The page lists Looney, Lunney, and O'Looney and describes symbols including ermine, sable/black, and an engrailed/invected line.
  - The accessible image result shows a decorative Looney achievement with black upper shield area and white ermine-patterned lower shield.
  - The page mixes O'Luinigh/Ulster and West Cork material, so it should not drive factual claims.
- Tradebit / heraldics Looney image: https://www.tradebit.com/filedetail.php/230125494-looney-family-crest-irish-coat-of
  - Image result shows the same black-and-ermine general pattern in a product/download context.
- House of Names, Looney: https://www.houseofnames.com/looney-family-crest
  - Commercial page. The accessible text gives the motto `Patriae infelici fidelis` and translates it as "Faithful to an unhappy country," expressing loyalty to one's homeland in adversity.
  - Image results associate the commercial cluster with a red-stag achievement motif for Looney variants.
- House of Names, O'Looney: https://www.houseofnames.com/o-looney-family-crest
  - Commercial page. The accessible text gives the same motto and an Ó Luinigh/Tyrone framing.
- House of Names, Lunney: https://www.houseofnames.com/lunney-family-crest
  - Commercial page. The accessible text gives the same motto and repeats an Ó Luinigh/Tyrone framing.
  - These commercial Looney/O'Looney/Lunney pages document circulation of the wording, but no authoritative source located in this project ties it to a named Looney/Ó Luanaigh armiger, branch, or grant. Treat it as a motto lead rather than verified family history.
- User-supplied Looney achievement image, saved in the repository as `design/assets/heraldry-gallery/looney-option2-simplified.png`
  - Shows motto scroll `Patriae infelici fidelis`, a blue-and-white shield, castle, and red stag.
  - Treated as family-associated visual context and a recurrence lead, not as an authoritative arms record.
- User-supplied simplified black-chief image, saved in the repository as `design/assets/heraldry-gallery/looney-option2-wavy-chief.png`
  - Shows a black wavy upper field over a white field with black ermine-like marks.
  - Merges the earlier Rank 1 and Rank 3 public treatment into a single visual family while preserving provenance caution.
- Crests & Arms, Looney: https://crestsandarms.com/pages/looney-family-crest-coat-of-arms
  - Commercial page. It reports eagle and arrow symbol meanings and silver/blue color meanings for Looney, but does not expose an authoritative blazon or official record.
- Heraldry Institute, Looney/O'Lunney: https://www.heraldrysinstitute.com/lang/en/coat_of_arms_card/idit/58841/type/bitmap/Coat%2Bof%2Barms%2Bof%2Bfamily%2BLooney%2CO%27Lunney%2BLooney%2CO%27Lunney?currency=GBP
  - Commercial listing with dossier/ref. 58841, naming Looney or O'Lunney from Ireland.
- HeraldryClipart, Looney or O'Lunney: https://www.heraldryclipart.com/itemdetail.aspx?item=db344f6e-062d-4df6-993c-785ed2b92791
  - Commercial/restricted image listing. It places `Looney or O'Lunney` under `Ireland v.25b > Lacy-Lyster`.
- ArmsAndBadges surname index: https://www.armsandbadges.com/itemindex.aspx?letter=l%25
  - Commercial index listing includes `Looney (Ireland)`, `Looney or O'Lunney`, and related coat-of-arms/badge entries.

## Public-use decision

Do not copy third-party commercial crest artwork into the public repository or site unless permission is confirmed. The public gallery should use user-supplied family-associated images, original schematic thumbnails, or other cleared material, and link to source pages for the reported artwork where available.

Safe public language:

> These are reported surname-associated or family-associated images found in source and commercial circulation. None is currently verified here as an official Looney/O'Looney/O'Luanaigh grant of arms or as a surname-wide entitlement.

## Follow-up research

- Search the Genealogical Office manuscript collection directly for Looney, O'Looney, O Luanaig, Ó Luanaigh, Loney, Lowney, Lunney, O'Lunney, and Ó Luinigh.
- Check printed armorials directly for a blazon matching the black-chief-and-ermine online pattern.
- If a candidate blazon appears, match it to a person, branch, place, and date before public language is strengthened.
